Mercy Oyeinbrakemi Koroyin was a nurse and academician par excellence that had tutored and mentored over a thousand nurses from the Niger Delta and beyond. She was best known for her godly dispositions and education advocacy.

Who Was Mercy Oyeinbrakemi Koroyin?

Mercy Oyeinbrakemi Koroyin was born in Lagos, Nigeria on the 14 of October 1958 and she hails from Amassoma town in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa state. Unassuming Mercy Oyeinbrakemi Koroyin was a Ph.D holder of Nursing from the University of Ibadan, Oyo State-Nigeria. She retired in 2018 as the Principal of the Bayelsa State School of Nursing and besides her academic dispositions and nursing prowess she was a virtuous woman worthy of emulation. Dr. Mercy Oyeinbrakemi Koroyin died in 2018 at the age of 60.

Her Parents and Birth

Mercy Oyeinbrakemi Koroyin (nee Ayebiowei) was born on October 14, 1958 in Lagos Island in the then Western-Nigeria to late Rev. Nestor Schulle Wilkinson Ayebiowei of Amassoma town in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa state and late Mrs. Dorcas Ayorogbo Ayebiowei (nee Fedapi) of Akeddei town in Sagbama Local Government Area of Bayelsa State. Rev. Nestor Schulle Wilkinson Ayebiowei was a famous Anglican clergy that served in the western Nigeria and many other towns in Nigeria in the 50s to 80s; he worked zealously in the lord’s vineyard without seeking for material want in return. He was not exorbitantly rich but was contented and had integrity. Rev. Nestor Schulle Wilkinson Ayebiowei died on June 4, 1990. Her mother, Mrs. Dorcas Ayorogbo Ayebiowei was a brave and hardworking woman, she instilled these virtues in her daughters from their very tender age; she died on the 14 of July, 2016. Together, these loving parents taught young Mercy the value of love, selfless service, truth, holiness and absolute trust in God. Mercy Oyeinbrakemi Koroyin was the first child amongst Six daughters.

Education

Young mercy attended Girls Modern Academy, Ikoyi Lagos from 1964 to 1970 and got the First School Leaving Certificate. She later proceeded to Marywood Grammar School, Ebute Metta, Lagos from 1971 to 1975 and obtained the West African School Certificate. Subsequently, she got admission into the School of Nursing, University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin in 1977 and graduated as a Registered Nurse (RN) in July 1980. She proceeded further to do midwifery at the School of Midwifery, Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) Idi-araba, Lagos and got her Registered Midwifery (RM) in March 1982. Thereafter, in August 1985 she bagged a B.Sc. in Nursing from the prestigious University of Ibadan, Oyo State. Still not satisfied, Mercy Oyeinbrakemi Koroyin studied for a post degree program in Nursing Education at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan and got a Diploma in July 1988. Again, she studied at the university of Ibadan for her master’s degree program and obtained her M.Sc. Nursing in August 2007. Eleven years after, in October 2018 she got a Ph.D. Nursing (Research Methodology) from the University of Ibadan. It is worthy to testify that Dr. Mercy Oyeinbrakemi Koroyin was the first Ph.D. holder in Nursing from Bayelsa State.

Membership

Dr Mercy Oyeinbrakemi Koroyin became a Fellow of the West African College of Nursing (FWACN) in 2009.

Her Career Life

Mercy Oyeinbrakemi Koroyin worked briefly at the Federal Ministry of Finance, Mosaic house, Lagos Nigeria as a Clerical Officer from 1975 to 1977 just after she got her Senior School Certificate.

Nevertheless, she had an eventful nursing career from 1980 to 2018 and eventually earned a Doctor of Philosophy thereon. She worked at the following places:

  • As Single qualified nurse in the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) from 1980
  • As a double qualified nurse in the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) from 1982 and rose to the rank of Principal Nursing Officer.

She later transferred her service to Bayelsa State in May 2001 and was employed by the Bayelsa State Hospital Management Board as an Assistant Chief Nursing Officer. Mercy was deployed to work in the Nursing Department in the Board Headquarters. She was later posted to lecture at the Bayelsa State School of Nursing, Tombia in October 2003. in October 2017, she was made Principal of the school. Dr. Mrs. Mercy Oyeinbrakemi Koroyin a nurse par excellence retired meritoriously on her 60th birthday, 14 of October, 2018.

It is worthy to state also that Mercy Oyeinbrakemi Koroyin resigned from the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) to join her husband Dr Godwin Akpotimibranumugha Koroyin in Ibadan, who was then working in the Oke Ado Hospital, Oke-Ado, Ibadan. Her husband subsequently resolved to establish his own private hospital at Ibadan. The hospital afterwards, did not come to fruition before his untimely demise, even though he had bought some of the equipment.

Resilient Mercy Oyeinbrakemi Koroyin kept her husband’s dream alive by establishing the hospital “Living Waters Hospital”, with some of her late husband’s friends and also worked with the hospital in Ibadan.

Family

Dr. Mrs. Mercy Oyeinbrakemi Koroyin was a virtuous woman in every sense of word. She kept a home even when her heartthrob unfortunately passed on to eternal glory. Dr Godwin Akpotimibranumugha Koroyin of Trofani town in Sagbama Local Government Area of Bayelsa State was a medical physician. He got married to Mercy on 7th of September, 1985, at St. Andrew’s Anglican Izon Church, Aiyetoro, Ajegungle after they dated for 8 years. Unfortunately, Godwin Akpotimibranumugha Koroyin died in 1994 and Mercy was only 36 years old with four (4) children. After the death of her husband, Mercy never had another relationship, she remained a widow in Christ Jesus and found an unbeatable solace no man can give. This virtuous woman solely trained her children and they are all graduates impacting our society.

Her faith

Mercy Oyeinbrakemi Koroyinwas born into a Christian family of the Anglican Communion. She was active in the fold until she got married in 1985 and later switched to the Pentecostal faith in 1987.She worshipped and worked diligently for the Lord Jesus at the following Pentecostal churches such as:

  • Christ Chapel, Ijora, Lagos,
  • Rhema Chapel, Oluyole, Ibadan
  • Assembly of Christ (A.O.C), Odo Ona Ibadan

It is also worth to state that when Mercy Oyeinbrakemi Koroyin moved to Bayelsa state she worshipped at the Shepherd’s Vine Christian Centre., Yenagoa and later Tombia Branch. She was a devout Christian and she led the Women Wing of the church.

Her Last Moments

She defended her Ph.D Nursing thesis at the University of Ibadan on the 4 of October, 2018, and on Sunday 14 of October, 2018 celebrated her 60th birthday with family and friends in her house in Bayelsa State.

Afterwards, on Monday, 15 October 2018 she formally handed over to her successor of the School of Nursing, Bayelsa State and had a glorious send forth on that Monday which was unknowing to all a farewell ceremony.

However, on Tuesday, 16 of October, 2018 Mercy Oyeinbrakemi Koroyin was scheduled to return to the University of Ibadan to perfect on her thesis work in readiness for convocation in November as a Ph.D. Graduate. She woke up that morning and prayed fervently with her family and embarked on the journey to Ibadan-Oyo State and only to be involved in a ghastly motor accident that resulted in her death.
